[ARCHIVED] Connect Douglas Launches Free Transportation Service Exclusively for Seniors

version 2_CONNECT DOUGLAS PILOT FLYER3_[59]

(Douglasville, GA)- Douglas County has launched a free transportation service exclusively for seniors aged 65 and above. The pilot Dial-a-Ride ‘Transportainment’ program, as it’s dubbed, launched last week through Connect Douglas, the county’s public transportation service.

The program is funded through a federal American Rescue Protection Act (ARPA) grant issued to Douglas County by the Atlanta Regional Commission. It is scheduled to run through June 2024 or until funding is exhausted.

Riders can use the service to travel between any two destinations in Douglas County. The service is ‘curb-to-curb,’ meaning riders are picked up at the closest curb to their requested pick-up location and taken to the closest curb at the drop-off location. Door-to-door service will be provided as an accommodation for riders with mobility limitations. Every vehicle is equipped with a lift for riders who use wheelchairs and other mobility aids. Senior riders will be allowed to have one caregiver and one companion travel with them as part of the service.

“Connect Douglas is excited to offer this service as an option for our senior community,” said Connect Douglas Director Ron Roberts. “While there is currently only temporary funding for this program, the Connect Douglas staff and its team of consultants is looking ahead to the future of transportation for our community via our Transit Master Plan which was presented to the Douglas County Board of Commissioners during the December 4th Work Session. If approved, the TMP will create a path to expand services and implement programs similar to this pilot in the coming years.”

The Dial-a-Ride transportation service is provided Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Trip reservations can be made up to one week in advance. To make a reservation, call 770-949-7665 and select option 4.  Phone reservations will be accepted Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Next-day trip reservations must be placed before 1:00 p.m.
