Why Plan?

Posted on September 14, 2022 at 5:20 PM by Allison Duncan

Essentially, we all make some sort of plan.  Whether it is a simple grocery list or a strategy for retirement, planning is an inherent part of what we all do.  And it is no different for a community.  The Comprehensive Plan is our strategy for our community to think about how we want to grow and develop.

In Georgia, modern planning standards were established by the State of Georgia with the 1989 Georgia Planning Act.  But planning and zoning has been around longer than that.  In Douglas County, the Chamber of Commerce created a Committee of Planning, Zoning and Codes to assist city and county leadership in planning for growth in the county. The year was 1957 and the impetus was the completion of the 4 lane freeway from Atlanta to Douglasville.

The Planning and Zoning Department maintains Minutes of the actions of this forerunner of our modern Planning and Zoning Board from its very first meeting in 1957 through its most recent meeting in 2022.  We also maintain a number of plans, maps and codes that are the legacy of these early initiatives.  Over the next few posts, we will highlight some of these early activities and how they influence where we are today.
